The energetic, sizeable band De Kift was ‘born in the brass band tradition, baptized in punk and raised in a love for music and poetry’ (de Volskrant). For 30 years the colorful West-Frisian ensemble has toured in The Netherlands and abroad. Aside from their concerts they continue tos eek collaboration in theatre and film projects. Their Dutch lyrics are compiled from world literature. Bassist Howie Reeve opens the evening with a solo performance. Howie Reeve played in important bands in the Glasgow music scene and formed a duo with bassist Mike Watt (Minutemen, The Stooges). ‘A breathtaking bass player’ (The Herald). The strict religious background of saxophonist John Dikeman and the affinity for gospel of double bassist Ernst Glerum come together in their project Spirituals, loosely inspired by Albert Ayler’s Swing Low Sweet Spiritual. The brass and percussion players of Zebra Street Band melt together into a repertoire that echoes Africa and the Caribbeans as well as jazz and breakbeat.
