Jazz-connections between South Korea and the Netherlands
The Netherlands and South Korea have had a good diplomatic relationship for 60 years. This is celebrated extensively, especially because a 60th anniversary, or Hwangap, is very important in Korean culture. In October, for example, various Dutch jazz musicians will perform at the Jarasum Jazz Festival in South Korea. In the same month, the BIMHUIS will be devoted to Korea Focus for two days, featuring five Korean bands.
The third on the program is CelloGayageum. CelloGayageum is the alliance between the Austrian cellist Sol Daniel Kim and the Korean Dayoung Yoon, player of the traditional string instrument gayageum. The duo was founded in Berlin and draws inspiration from the eventful history of that city. By experimenting, they developed their symbiosis of Eastern and Western styles, which they incorporate in their own compositions.
