Boi Akih celebrates its 21 years of existence at the BIMHUIS. The warm voice of Monica Akihary and the inventive guitar playing of Niels Brouwer form the basis of the group, which brings together jazz with chamber music, Moluccan Melanesian music, imaginative grooves and fascinating improvisations. Especially for this festive concert an eight-piece ensemble was formed with a unique line-up including the Malian kora player Zoumana Diarra, cello wizard Ernst Reijseger and the legendary Moluccan percussionist Nippy Noya, who has collaborated with Charlie Mariano, Billy Cobham, Jan Akkerman and many others. ‘In an impressive way, traditional and contemporary music, acoustic and electronic, fused together. Rarely did I hear Monica Akihary sing this good – crystal clear and with complete devotion. Her partner Niels Brouwer and the other accompanists pushed each other to great heights. The thunderous applause that followed was completely justified’ (MixedWorldMusic on Boi Akih at the Holland Festival).
