About the Magma Duo

The Magma Duo owes its name to the piece 'In the Magma Room' by Reza Namavar, which was written in 2011 especially for the Oskar Back Violin Competition. After Emmy Storms and Cynthia Liem received the prize for the best interpretation of this work and performed the work in the final of the competition in the Great Hall of the Concertgebouw, they decided to use this name.

However, the duo has been around for some time: Emmy and Cynthia met each other as students at the conservatory. Immediately they had a strong personal connection, and soon they started playing together more and more. First as Trio Vere with cellist Ephraïm van IJzerlooy, with whom they were awarded the Labberté-Hoedemaker Prize in 2008 during the Peter de Grote Festival in Groningen. After Emmy joined the Trio Suleika, the Magma Duo remained.

The Magma Duo convinced the jury during the auditions of Dutch Classical Talent with 'energetic play that evokes reactions'. Always looking for a challenge, the duo likes to venture outside the beaten track of the traditional repertoire, with a particular interest in contemporary, rarely played and Dutch repertoire. The duo plays full of fire and visible pleasure, and gives themselves, with humor and spontaneity, the space to experiment. This often leads to surprising, fresh insights, for themselves and for the listener.

As part of the coaching program of the Dutch Classical Talent Tour & Award, the Magma Duo wanted to take lessons with Aleksey Igudesman, who they had included in their program as a composer. Attempts to get in touch with him led to participation in the first edition of the international competition 'A Feast of Duos' in Switzerland in August 2014, in which Aleksey Igudesman and Hyung-ki Joo judged. The duo won first prize at this competition and two special prizes (the Kaech Artists prize and the Konzerthaus prize).

In the 2015-2016 season, this brought the duo to Vienna for a debut at the Konzerthaus. In addition, the competition prompted the duo to further musical and creative experiments, exploring more theatrical aspects and other musical genres as well.

In the summer of 2016, the Magma Duo's debut CD was also released internationally on the Globe Records label. This CD received many positive reviews.
