Real-time artistic reflections

While concert halls are closed, the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ hosts regular live streams of concerts from its empty main auditorium. As the name of today’s programme, Music for Empty Spaces, suggests, this performance was created especially for this occasion, presenting 12 premieres by 12 composers, performed by 12 musicians. Organised by composer and pianist Heather Pinkham, the impressive line-up features composers Jacob ter Veldhuis, Joey Roukens and Pinkham herself and musicians including pianist Ralph van Raat, percussionist Dominique Vleeshouwers and cellist Maya Fridman.

Created in response to the coronavirus pandemic and the experience of self-isolation, the works are an almost real-time reflection of current developments and their social and personal consequences.
