In this exceptional concert at the BIMHUIS, the internationally renowned ICP Orchestra joins forces with De Waterlandse Harmonie from Ransdorp. Finding joy in playing is the main goal according to conductor Thomas Geerts and his extended brass band, which originated in the previous century out of various brass bands from vilages in the surrounding districts of Amsterdam. The ICP Orchestra is a unique phenomenon in the world, a cross between a big band and a chamber orchestra in which brass and string players improvise on the cutting edge. The group is spurred on by drummer Han Bennink, known for his extravert way of playing. He co-founded ICP with pianist Misha Mengelberg (1935-2017), whose compositions form the core of the repertory. This repertory connects jazz and swing to European music, avant-garde and a healthy dose of absurdism. ‘ICP have always made their own rules, and hearing them followed, broken and reinvented in real time remains one of contemporary music’s enduring delights’ (The Guardian). ‘Dada humour everywhere threatens to infiltrate the sawing strings, riffing horns and leapfrog rhythms; the group’s stock-in-trade is to confound expectations by distorting the familiar and carousing with the irrational. Wear a safety helmet while listening’ (The Wire).
