The W.H. Vliegenbos is a woodland park planted more than a century ago, with the idea that city people are also entitled to enjoy a little wilderness. During 24H Noord, you can join an expedition through this mini-Amazon of Amsterdam Noord. In the morning we’ll be hunting for animal tracks (tour in English), and at night listening to the sounds of the woods with Noord’s urban ecologist and his bat detector (tour in Dutch).

Bouldering is the most expressive and spectacular climbing discipline: technical, dynamic and athletic. You climb walls more than four metres high, without a rope, harness or any other equipment. During 24H Noord you can try it yourself at Monk. Instruction sessions start every 15 minutes.
A green pop-up performance among the Christmas trees. Four storytellers sit on a bench at the edge of the woods. They tell spellbinding stories and send the public into the woods to bring nature back to life by sowing seeds, weeding, and tending to the trees.
Always wanted to see what goes on at a shipyard? During 24H Noord, Damen Shiprepair offers an exclusive behind-the-scenes view. Walk right underneath a gigantic ship, watch a fascinating film about the old NDSM shipyard, visit the exhibition or take a tour of the 18-hectare site. Explore the entire shipyard, from the 250-metre-long dry dock to the 15-metre-high construction hall. Please note: unfortunately the site is only accessible to people able to climb stairs and walk on uneven surfaces.
At Sir Adam and The Butcher Social Club in the A’DAM Toren, during 24H Noord you can find everything a grown-up needs: cocktails and games. Develop your cocktail skills in a workshop by a trained mixologist. And if you’re the one who’s got to drive home? Test out your skills behind the wheel with Super Mario Kart on a giant screen. Or play one of your other favourites, from arcade games like Pac-Man to pinball and billiards.
Fly off into the cosmos during 24H Noord at this fun-filled mini-arts festival. With glow-in-the-dark yoga (Glowga!) in the Milky Way Zone, live art, space stories by Chidi Onwuka and fluorescent gin and tonics. Last but not least, a Space Jam AfterpARTy.
During 24H Noord you can take a scrumptious and informative tour of Chocolatemakers, a fair-trade organic chocolate factory. See, smell and taste how real chocolate is made. What’s the difference between one cocoa bean and another? And how do you achieve the perfect flavour?
During 24H Noord, the shopkeepers of the Van der Pek neighbourhood show what makes their area so great. Look out for skate lessons, workshops (pizza making, foot relaxation and screen printing), literary surprises, live music, a discussion on black heritage, a silent disco, art and fashion.

Prepare to get competitive, because during 24H Noord, it’s time to play games. In the morning and afternoon, there’s giant Twister, a living Game of Goose on the quay, and the Toddler Olympics. And in the evening, there’s the official Werewolves National Championship around the campfire, Bring Your Own Boardgame (BYOB), and long, complicated games in the boats of De Ceuvel.

Seaweed is the food of the future! Test your knowledge of tasty marine plants during 24H Noord and try surprising seaweed snacks on the geWoonboot, a houseboat-meeting space. Or take a refreshing boat trip to Schoonschip, a new sustainable floating neighbourhood.
Have you got a friend or relative who has a wise saying for every occasion? Bring them along to A Lab to paint a traditional Dutch tile with their favourite witty aphorism to hang in the bathroom or over the bed. Dutch seniors (60+) from Amsterdam Noord will share this old tradition with you. What’s more, you can round off a cosy chat over a cup of coffee and a piece of cake with a visit to an exhibition of photo portraits of 22 pensioners and their tile proverbs.
Café Noorderlicht is perhaps one of the nicest spots in Noord, with a great view of the IJ and the city across the water. During 24H Noord, you can learn to bake the most delicious bread: knead your dough, stick it on a skewer, bake it over a smouldering fire, and enjoy – all accompanied by great live music. During 24H Noord, brasserie extraordinaire Cannibale Royale takes you on a trip to the Big Easy, New Orleans, city of music, nightlife and spicy cuisine. Including salsa dance workshops and hot sauce-making classes, plus delicious soul food and appropriate drinks, for all ages.
For more than 20 years, a former shipyard on Zamenhofstraat has been home to a complex of studios for artists and designers. The atmosphere is rough and ready, messy, busy and creative. During 24H Noord you can view the art, take part in creative workshops and tours, enjoy music and even a kimono show.
For the exhibition ‘Far Away Close By’, seven artists have taken the public space of Amsterdam Noord as their inspiration. In bike rides, guided tours and artist talks, you can find out what they discovered (and what work they made) about this exciting environment. Meet the artists during 24H Noord and have your photo taken in the special photo booth.
Always wanted to know how a 35mm movie is projected and see what goes on backstage at the cinema? During 24H Noord, for the first time, EYE Filmmuseum is opening its projection booths to the public. There are also tours of the group exhibition ‘A Tale of Hidden Histories’, with film and video on truth, interpretation, facts, memories and reality. Do they really exist, or are they all just a construction?
Exclusive tours of the Ponthaven, the IJ ferry dock. Entry is normally strictly prohibited, but during 24H Noord there’s a unique chance to look around – you can even check out the engine room of a ferry, for example. A skipper and an engineer will be on hand to answer all your burning ferry-related questions.
During 24H Noord, make an artistic group portrait with family, friends or classmates: you can have your photo taken in front of a ‘green screen’, and draw the background yourself. It’s your chance to be an ultra-modern Dutch master.
The speciality of restaurant Semai is injera, the pancake-like bread traditionally eaten in Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia. In continuous workshops during 24H Noord, you can learn how to make the batter and cook injera yourself. ‘Melkam mageb’ – bon appétit!
At the Amsterdam Noord Museum, you can test your knowledge on the past and present of Amsterdam Noord with quizmaster Peter Lievense. If you’re up to scratch, you’ll be awarded a highly coveted piece of paper: your very own Noord Diploma. While you’re there, you can also watch fascinating films about Amsterdam and see an exhibition to mark the 50th anniversary of the IJ-tunnel.
Spring is in the air and it’s time to fill the city’s balconies, gardens and roof terraces with organically-grown plants. At the Big Plant Festival during 24H Noord, you can boost your knowledge of plants and gardening during workshops, talk to growers from nurseries, buy organically-grown plants at the plant market, and browse the pop-up houseplant shop.
No need to head for sunny climes to visit a winery because Noord now has Chateau Amsterdam. This chateau imports grapes to make Amsterdam wine. During 24H Noord, you can hear the initiators’ story and learn fascinating facts about the finest wines.
Amsterdam is bursting at the seams with artistic and musical talent! To showcase it the famous Veronica ship will open its doors during 24H Noord for a day full of underground music and art. Visual artists, photographers and fashion designers will create a wonderful party atmosphere with singer-songwriters, bands and rappers providing a little musical drama. Plus there will be tasty Indonesian food on offer thanks to Padi Dua.
During 24H Noord, don’t miss the sandy fun of Jeu de Sable 2019. Kids can take part in a sandcastle competition while the grown-ups show off their throwing skills in a boules contest. The barbecue will be lit from 13:00, there’ll be music outside, and from 23:00 a second wave of playful people will join in for the afterparty of the Tactical Outdoor Games Club.
At Walhalla (‘Valhalla’), during 24H Noord you can taste the gods’ favourite ales. Take a tour behind the scenes to learn about the beer brewing process and the origins of this microbrewery and taproom. DJ Arie will be playing from 20:00 to 23:00.
During 24H Noord, Oedipus Brewing invites you to use all your senses as you taste their beer. What effect does colour or even sound have on taste? Hear the story of how the Oedipus microbrewery began, see the beer brewing in the vats, and of course taste the finished products – both Oedipus classics and the latest experiments.
Always wanted to give pole dancing a try? Come to Amsterdam’s most up-to-date pole dancing studio during 24H Noord. Pole dancing is the ideal work-out to get fit and strong, and at the same time feel feminine and sexy.
Explore the old Stork factory on the IJ during 24H Noord, when it will be a buzz with exciting performing arts. With short dance films, plus live dance and theatre, and a behind-the-scenes view of Cinedans, DAT!school, and Dansmakers Amsterdam.
Creative living-room café and restaurant De Ruimte is pulling out all the stops during 24H Noord with the opening of 'R MUTT #2', an exhibition by five of Amsterdam’s most talented female artists. The party starts in the afternoon (including kids’ workshops) and carries on till the next morning – with dinner, live music and performances. And from start to finish, with only amazing women on stage.
The old trams of Trammeland are well worth a visit in themselves, but during 24H Noord it’s really party time! You can paint giant letters, do craft workshops, join in the ‘Trammeland Mini-playbackshow’ (miming to pop songs) and enjoy the magic flea circus. With live music at 20:00 by Mooncake Bakery.

Set your spring a tingling and your toes a tapping with this continuous percussion workshops. DJ Moonshine will be spinning the best black American tracks from the 1920s to the 1950s on old 78s for that authentic vibe. Incidentally, the stunning Zonneplein was built during the same era. Hop on your bike and discover this lively piece of old north Amsterdam at Local Spaanders!
HoogtIJ is Amsterdam’s highest greenhouse, with an amazing view of the city. During 24H Noord you can enjoy great live jazz, delicious bites and cocktails that hit the spot.
For 24H Noord, Sociëteit SEXYLAND is holding a bingo afternoon that transforms into a dance night for people with a disability – because nightlife is for everyone!
During 24H Noord, theatre group Parels voor de Zwijnen present VETARM (‘Low Fat’), a piece about weighty women and heavy-duty men. Members of the Amsterdam Noord community who struggle with their weight play themselves in a performance that doesn’t problematise their personal experience but enables us to empathise with a smile and a tear.
A food fest where mermaids, oyster girls and skilful chefs prepare seafood dishes ranging from oysters and mussels to crab burgers. Throw in a good glass of wine or a gin and tonic for a perfect night out. Always wanted to learn how to open oysters? Join in the free oyster-shucking workshop. For smaller kids there are exciting sea-themed films like ‘The Little Mermaid’ (in Dutch).
At Pllek, during 24H Noord, you can enjoy great food and music at Beatroots XTRA, with surprise live music and DJs both during and after dinner. Around 22:30 the tables are moved out of the way and it’s time to dance until the small hours.
You might be a grown-up now but 24H Noord is a fantastic chance to reconnect with your childhood, so get set for a game of Human Stratego or Capture the Flag. The games are full on and you can expect to get dirty, so come in your playing-out clothes and sturdy shoes. Please note: 16+ only. And if you’re there, you’re joining in!
An alternative film night during 24H Noord, hosted by Massih Hutak, a rapper, writer and columnist for Amsterdam-based daily Het Parool. For FC Hyena, Hutak has compiled a special programme running till the small hours, showcasing previously unseen film jewels.

The Skatecafé is an offbeat creative club, skate oasis and restaurant, and during 24H Noord it delivers a well-deserved ode to Amsterdam Noord. All acts on the programme are from the northern side of the city.
Shelter, in the cellar of A’DAM Toren, is both literally and figuratively one of Amsterdam’s most underground nightclubs. Entry is €5 for the first 50 clubbers who’d like to round off 24H Noord with an unforgettable night.
