First up is a teaser of Venus versus Modernity, a confrontational performance based on the painful story of Sarah Baartman and the exploitation of the Black women’s body. Second, we get a taste of Carré Noir. In this choreographic performance, Elizabeth Tambwe relies on Malevich’s “Black Square”. After, we are introduced to Unravel by visual artist Thania Petersen. In her performance, Petersen uses the Islamic tapestry as a South African Muslim to express the threat to this spiritual place. Finally, we get to see the full performance of Amaqhawe. This dance work, by choreographer Mzo Gasa and dancers from the Sibonelo Dance project from Cape Town, is about memories, resistance and hope.
There will be an afterparty with a guest DJ who will take you on a swinging journey through the Afro sounds of the past, now and the future.
This evening is the opening of Afro_Vibes festival. Check out the full Afro_Vibes program at Compagnietheater here.
