Celebrating Indian culture
During this free event, Amstelveen's city square and shopping area will be transformed into a colourful, celebratory festival area, with lots of Indian cuisine, drinks and live performances, such as traditional Indian music and dance (from Bollywood and classical). The festival begins at 12:00, before finally drawing to a close with a spectacular fireworks display in the evening at 19:00.
Festival of Lights
Every year in India, the Diwali Festival of Lights is celebrated on Amavasya – the 15th day of the Hindu month of Ashwin (October/ November). Diwali, or row of lights, is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs and although it has a different historical meaning to each group, in general it celebrates knowledge, wisdom and fighting ignorance.
