The White Blouse

Photographer Marie-Jeanne van Hövell tot Westerflier was inspired by a painting by James Abbott McNeill Whistler titled The Girl in the muslin Dress. For her series of photographs featuring over 70 portraits of girls, women, boys and men, the photographer has centred on a single white blouse from 1912, which each sitter interacts with. Captured in black and white to evoke a sense of mystery, the atmospheric portraits were made using a medium format analogue camera. Among the portraits you’ll find some familiar Dutch faces including Jenny Arean, Jort Kelder, Toer van Schayk and Daan Schuurmans.
