A glimpse into the Indonesian fight for independence

In 1947, at the height of the Indonesian struggle for independence, the Stedelijk hosted the Djaya brothers' first exhibition in the Netherlands. The event marked the first solo presentation of contemporary non-Western artists at the museum and highlighted the Indonesian fight for independence through the brothers' work.

Research recently conducted into the Djaya's presence in the Netherlands has shed new light on their activities and inspired this intriguing exhibition. As part of the Stedelijk Turns initiative, the programme focuses on a particular collection to reveal untold stories and add new perspectives.
