Romanovs under the spell of the Knights
The Hermitage Amsterdam sets passions alight this summer with Romanovs under the spell of Knights, a revealing exhibition focused on tsars and knights. Utilising masterpieces in the collection including key works from Hermitage St. Petersburg, this exhibition charts the Russian court, from courtly love and to thrilling tournaments. Among the works on show is a beautifully illuminated copy of Roman de la Rose, an erotically charged and popular medieval literary work.
Under a spell
Around the beginning of the nineteenth century, Europeans were becoming interested in the Middle Ages marking the beginning of a revival across many cultural fields. The Russian court was caught under the spell of the revival with Tsar Alexander III purchasing a significant collection of works pre-auction, much to the ire of the French, and tsars Paul and Nicolas I both collecting ancient weapons.
