Jean-François Millet: Sowing the seeds of modern art

French artist Jean-François Millet’s influence on modern art is often overlooked, but this exhibition aims to address that. Although the Barbizon School painter was classically trained, his works were boundary-pushing and progressive influencing and inspiring generations of artists to come including Van Gogh, Monet, Homer, Seurat and Dalí. The exhibition sheds light on his technique and use of coarse brushstrokes, strong lines and how he simplified shapes to their bare essence. Radical perspectives in his landscapes and his focus on peasant life set him apart.
