HIV in vulnerable communities

For Invisible lives: HIV at the fringes of society, writer Colet van der Ven and photographer Adriaan Backer travelled to different parts of the world to document the experiences of HIV survivors from vulnerable communities: women in patriarchal Tadzhikistan, victims of political violence in Kenya, gay men of colour in the South of the US, transgenders in India, convicts in South Africa, drug users in Myanmar. The photo series shows how ignorance, fear and intolerance make life difficult for patients and complicate the distribution of medical and social aid.
