A who’s who of artist portraits

As you’d expect, portraits of Vincent van Gogh are included in this exhibition. But it’s not just the Dutch master, you’ll also see work by other big names including Edvard Munch, Gustave Courbet, Francis Bacon and Helene Schjerfbeck. Plus, see how modern and contemporary artists have been inspired by van Gogh.

Merging reality and fiction

From the 19th century on the portrait came into its own. Artists were beginning to be seen as creative geniuses with the ‘artist's portrait’ becoming a popular subgenre. A wide variety of self-portraits, portraits of artists along with studio portraits were produced. What was evident is the lines between reality and fiction were blurring. In the Picture considers the role and significance of the artist's portrait and includes a special loan from The Courtauld Gallery in London, Van Gogh's Self-portrait with a connected ear.
