About the photographers
Alma Kim (1989) was born in South Korea, where she studied and practiced fashion design. In 2016 she moved to the Netherlands to study at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. She graduated from the Photography Department in 2020. Her work focuses on intimate portraits - both of people and objects - with a recently developed special interest in plants. Her aim is to capture and emphasize the often invisible essence of what surrounds us.
Nkeiru Ofor (1999), also known by her stage name Nky, is a Nigerian-Dutch photographer, director and graphic designer based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Ofor makes work that is in line with her heritage and the interfaces between culture and society. She captures people and objects from her own perspective; a perspective that is, however, not often shared. She wants to create contemporary ideas and stories through her interest in music, fashion and the cultures and communities around her.
Both photographers use still and moving images as tools in exploring their own cultural identities, as well as the identities of those they portray. The central question in both projects is how to stay connected to your own roots and cultural heritage, while trying to take root in new ground.
