Charlotte Salomon in close-up

Charlotte Salomon was born into a Jewish family in Berlin. She studied art creating her ‘multi-media’ masterpiece comprising hundreds of gouache drawings after fleeing Nazi Germany. Her native Berlin was a hub of artistic creativity with a focus on film, which was fairly new at the time. Charlotte loved the cinema, and its influence resonates in her work.

This exhibition aims to shed new light on Life? or Theatre? by combining film footage from the period with a selection of Salomon’s gouaches to give an indication of how cinema influenced her work.
