Breitner, Israels and contemporaries

Amsterdam experienced rapid growth from around 1900 with trade and urban expansion creating dynamism in the city. Artists such as George Hendrik Breitner, Isaac Israels, Piet Mondriaan, and Leo Gestel were attracted to the activity creating works that capture the times and embraces modernism. From construction to turbulent nightlife, and working life to rural scenes on the outskirts of the city, these artists captured the city in watercolour and pastels.
