In collaboration with Fabrique des Lumières

World-famous phenomenon

After opening Atelier des Lumières in Paris, Hall des Lumières in New York and Théâtre des Lumières in Séoul, it is Amsterdam's turn to be artistically illuminated. Fabrique des Lumières is located in a former 19th-century gas plant on the Westergasterrein, and with a projection surface of 3800 m2, it's immediately the most extensive digital art centre in the Netherlands.

Complete immersive experience

ImpressieClassic paintings and new masterpieces are brought to life with dozens of projectors. They move through the space, flow into each other and cover entire walls, floors and ceilings. The projected images are accompanied by music composed especially for the exhibition. For example, music by Philip Glass, Ludwig van Beethoven and Gustav Mahler will accompany you on your adventure. This creates an extensive interactive world where you fully immerse yourself and eventually become part of the artwork.

Masterworks in a new style

The Kiss

In the past, Atelier des Lumières showed multidimensional works by Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Salvador Dalí, among others. The first Fabrique des Lumières exhibition takes you through 100 years of Viennese art. One of the most essential Viennese artists is Gustav Klimt, who you maybe know from his work The Kiss. In his works, Klimt used a lot of gold and decorative patterns, symbolizing the artistic revolution of the Vienna Secession.

In addition to Klimt, you will see works of art by his contemporaries and admirers, including Egon Schiele and Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Schiele advocated a new representation of landscapes and the human body, while Hundertwasser packed his architectural structures and paintings full of symbolism. The portraits, landscapes, nude portraits and colours give you a new perspective of these Viennese artists.

Modern art in a historic place

The Westergasterrein was built in the 17th century with the aim of producing manufactured gas for lighting the streets of Amsterdam. Nowadays, the site has since been converted into a creative and cultural centre hosting a theatre, film house, nightclub, restaurants and several event locations. Fabrique des Lumières is the new bright spot in the heart of the site and is not to be missed.
