Outsider Art Museum

The term ‘outsider art’ refers to art created by people who have little contact with the mainstream art world and that does not fit into the traditional canon of art. The artists are not restrained by accepted artistic conventions and their pure work depicts an unfiltered reflection of their inner world. This inner world is often so rich that it overflows and results in an authentic and unique oeuvre that exists in parallel with mainstream art.
The Outsider Art Museum at the Hermitage Amsterdam is the only museum in the Netherlands that exhibits prominent works by Dutch and international Outsider artists. Every six months there’s a new exhibition on show. It provides a platform for these intriguing artists and aims to contribute to the indisputable role of outsider art in the history of art. Find out what’s on now
