At this extraordinary shipyard on the outskirts of Lelystad, ships with an important maritime history are taken from oblivion and returned to their former glory.
Discover Golden Age crafts
The first show-stopping reconstruction was of the 17th-century VOC ship the Batavia – ten years in the making, it was completed in 1995. Work is now underway on the reconstruction of De 7 Provinciën, a 17th-century battleship once captained by Michiel de Ruyter. The Batavia Yard is dedicated to the conservation of cultural heritage and traditional crafts, making it a great place to see skills of yesteryear being practised. And visitors can also get involved – after checking out the ships, test your knot-tying or your head for heights by climbing the mast!
