Reguliersgracht (Seven bridges)

Amsterdam canal bridge

Amsterdam is a city of bridges, and whether you’re standing atop them or on a boat passing under, they’re a distinctive city sight – and will make an unforgettable experience unique to the city. No stretch is quite as special as the so-called love tunnel at Reguliersgracht, where seven arched brick bridges can be seen together.

Secluded city gardens

Behind those charming canal houses are some truly stunning gardens. Escape the crowds to a little-known garden, where you can surprise your other half in relative seclusion. Canal house museums, for example Museum van Loon, Museum Willet-Holthuysen (pictured) or Huis Marseille, all have cute gardens.

Botanical gardens

Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam Barbara van Amelsfort

Have you and your loved one managed to successfully nurture a fiddle-leaf fig and feel you’re ready to take your commitment to another level? Let plants be the theme by marvelling at the exotic specimens at Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam’s botanical gardens. Pop the question beneath the palms or head up to the treetop walk inside the greenhouse for a proposal with a view.

Skinny bridge

Amsterdam Amstel river Skinny Bridge at night Eric de Bruijn

This historic wooden drawbridge was once so narrow that it was difficult for two people to pass each other. Luckily there’s now enough room for you and your partner to enjoy this charming spot on the water. And, legend has it that couples who share a kiss on or under this beautiful little bridge will be blessed with everlasting love. The best time to visit is in the evening, when thousands of lights illuminate the bridge.

Keukenhof Gardens

What better place to get the Instagram-friendly engagement shot than among bright and beautiful flowers as far as the eye can see? If you arrive in spring, the famous Keukenhof tulips will be the perfect backdrop for a proposal, or explore the Flower Strip by bike. And, if the answer’s yes, you might as well start discussing wedding flowers.

Hidden gems in Vondelpark

If you’re feeling like stretching your legs pre-knee bend, take a loop around Vondelpark, the green heart of the city, where there are plenty of charming spots for a very important question. Check out the pavilion, one of the park’s bridges, or the historic Vondelkerk with its Gothic architecture giving a hauntingly romantic backdrop. Make sure to pack bubbly for a celebration picnic.
