Ruïne van Brederode
These ruins are actually the remnants of the medieval Castle Brederode, which was built around 1355 atop an older, damaged stronghold.
From both a military and trade perspective, the location of Castle Brederode was viewed as strategically perfect. Surrounded by marshy bog, unexpected attacks were difficult and rare. However, Spanish soldiers did finally launch a successful attack in 1573, plundering the castle and setting it alight. Since then it has remained as a historic ruin.
Access to the ruins is only possible via small bridges. Unfortunately, these are not suitable for wheelchairs.
