"De Eenhoorn” farm

"De Eenhoorn" farm is the most lavish example of a stolp farm in De Beemster. The living section is of brick and the stable section extending out to the back is of wood. The raised mid-section with neck gable is a variation of the Amsterdam Vingboons style (Philip Vingboons), crowned with, among other things, the image of a unicorn and decorated with sculpted gable ornaments and a cartouche with 1682. The living section is partly basement and there is a tiled fireplace in the milk cellar.

Characteristic of these farms are the large orchards. These served several purposes: besides fruit production they provided coppice and convenience wood. In early spring the sheep roamed there with the new-born lambs. Later in the summer calves grazed there. At that time the client was the Mayor of Hoorn.
