If you come by car and bring your bikes on a cycle rack, you can start the trail at the tourist transfer point near junction point 53. Then cycle through the beautiful landscape in the direction of Holysloot. Once you arrive you can take a pleasant break at Het Schoolhuis. Although it does not bear the title of tea house, you will certainly enjoy yourself at this former village master’s home from 1875. You can sit outside on delightful terraces, one of which overlooks the IJsselmeer dike.
With the ferry – that always runs between 9:30 and 17:00 hours – you leave the picturesque village. The ferry sails from mid-April to June and in September on Saturday and Sunday. In July and August, it sails every day. After cycling for an hour (from the start) you will see Tea Garden Overleek. You get swaying reed, chirping birds and a stunning view as a gift here. For lunch, the tea garden has plenty of local products such as Ransdorper brie and sour dough bread from the Vlaamsch Broodhuys. They also rent whisper boats for a nice slow sail through the canals.
‘t Weeshuis (the Orphanage) is situated on the outskirts of Monnickendam town centre. Drink a cup of tea in the garden of this sixteenth century building. That’s pure enjoyment. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the former orphanage gave shelter to many children. Now this monument is home to a tearoom where delicious tea, coffee, homemade apple pie and the best bread rolls are served. What makes ‘t Weeshuis even more special is that – under professional supervision – people with a (mental) disability work here.
Are you looking forward to the end of your day’s cycling? That’s good, because in tea garden and tearoom ‘t Einde in Zuiderwoude you can take a break in a real oasis of peace with an open view of the fields on three sides. Everything here is homemade, and you can taste it.
