Due to a special EU regulation, international visitors can save up to 21% on all shopping in Amsterdam. All prices in stores are shown including Value Added Tax (VAT). This VAT amount varies between 19% and 25% in the EU. In the Netherlands, the VAT is 21%. Ex: If you spent €121 in a store, you are eligible to claim back €21. How to claim back Value Added Tax?
1. Save your store receipts and/or invoices. Find a list of more than 55.000 participating stores on www.vatfree.com, or download the app via iOs or Android.
2. Before leaving the EU, visit a special Customs desk at the airport to get a validation stamp proving you are taking the goods back home. At Schiphol airport you may find the Customs location before check-in, at the end of Departure hall 3.
3. Upload a photo of the stamped receipt(s) in the vatfree.com app or website.
VAT refund is arranged together with the local government and stores. We, as Vatfree.com, will arrange the reimbursement for you and contact the stores. Once the store settles the refund amount, you will receive a notification in the vatfree.com app or via your email. You can then have the amount transferred to your SEPA bankaccount, credit card, Alipay, Wechat or Paypal.
The refund process takes about six to eight weeks but some stores offer instant refunds (upon adding the photo of the stamped receipt in the vatfree.com app, a refund is immediately paid).
