Flowers of Amsterdam

This route takes you to see the magnificent colours of the flower fields, which are in bloom from the end of March to mid-May. It’s an ideal way to experience the beauty of the bulb-growing region with its spectacular displays of tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and snowdrops. Apart from enjoying the aesthetics, you can also learn about the flowers and their history, with visits to the Museum de Zwarte Tulp (the ‘Black Tulip Museum’) and bulb-growing nurseries.   • Rijksmuseum

    Start the Flowers of Amsterdam route here.

  • From Rijksmuseum, take bus number 397 (Connexxion) to Hoofddorp station. Change here onto bus number 859 (Arriva) heading to the Keukenhof. These buses are included in the Tiqets combi ticket.
  • Keukenhof Gardens

    These beautiful flower fields are world famous – it’s not hard to see why. 

  • After visiting the Keukenhof you can rent a bike at Rent-a-Bike van Dam. Cycle through the gate along the red cycle path and turn right. Take the first turning on the right. Follow the signs to Keukenhof Castle (Kasteel Keukenhof). When you arrive you can leave your bike and enjoy a walk around the estate.

  • Castle Keukenhof

    The castle at the Keukenhof is a turreted mansion dating from 1642.

  • Cycle back to the roundabout on the N208 and turn right. To your right you’ll see some beautiful flower fields. Please take care of the flowers: it’s OK to take photos, but please don’t enter the fields. Follow the cycle path to the sports fields, then turn right between the two sports fields. Go straight on along the sports fields. Now continue on the same road for quite a distance, following the bends (Spekkelaan). Take a left on Loosterweg. You’ll see flowers nearly everywhere you look. Keep following the road. Take a left on Johan Speelmanweg until you see a sign for De Tulperij on your right. Cross the road and go along the Oude Herenweg. Follow the signs for De Tulperij. After cycling straight on for a while, you’ll come to De Tulperij on the right.
  • De Tulperij

    An old-fashioned bulb-growing nursery with flower fields and more.

  • At the end of the lane, turn right. Then immediately turn left onto Achterweg-Zuid. Follow this road. When the road splits in two, keep to the right, and at the end follow the road round to the right. At the roundabout turn left, the third exit. You are now entering Lisse. Follow the cycle path to the town centre. At the bend, cross over to the other side. When you get to the church, cross over towards the centre of Lisse. Go straight on a little further until you see restaurant De Vier Seizoenen on the left, on a tree-lined square. You can leave your bike here – the next destinations are all within walking distance.

    The perfect place to stop off for lunch, coffee or a glass of wine.

  • Walk along the alleyway directly opposite De Vier Seizoenen. Museum de Zwarte Tulp is at the end.

    Learn about the history of the bulb-growing region, dating back five centuries.

  • Go back to De Vier Seizoenen and take the street on the right. Take the first right into the shopping street. In the distance you’ll see a mural. Walk to the right of the mural – it’s a great photo opportunity! Soon you’ll see Smaakhuis on the right. After exploring the shop, walk back to your bike.
  • Smaakhuis Lisse

    Don’t leave Lisse without tasting the local specialities! This is the place to do it.

  • From De Vier Seizoenen, cycle along Heereweg. Go straight on at the junction and continue to the roundabout. Take the third exit. Cycle straight on to the next roundabout and cross over the road on the left-hand side. Immediately after the roundabout, turn right. You’ll come to Rent-a-Bike van Dam on the left, and you can return your bike.
  • Rent-a-Bike van Dam-Keukenhof

    At the end of the route you can return your bike here.

  • Take bus 859 (Arriva) back to to Hoofddorp Station, then change onto bus number 397 (Connexxion) for Amsterdam's city centre. These buses are also included in the Tiqets combi ticket. Check 9292.nl for public transport options.
