Going to a Michelin-rated restaurant can be quite the treat, and the Netherlands certainly isn't short on options. With 23 Michelin-rated restaurants in Amsterdam carrying one (or two) of the coveted stars, these fine-dining experiences are as diverse as the city itself.

Aan de Poel

Daalder

A mere six months after receiving its first Michelin star, Daalder exchanger its famously informal setting in a former Jordaan café for a much larger location in the monumental Het Sieraad building in West street art, graphics and neon contrast the Amsterdam School architectural features of this former goldsmith’s college, where chef-owner Dennis Huwaë and his team continue to craft their creative blend of internationally-influenced casual fine dining. Choose from a four- or five-course chef’s menu for lunch or six-, eight- or ten-courses for dinner or order a la carte.

De Bokkedoorns

With not one but two Michelin stars, this restaurant located at the edge of a lake in the middle of expansive dunes outside Haarlem is well worth the trip, and not just for the views. Take a seat on the terrace to dine on one of the celebrated menus.

The Duchess

Step into the marbled halls of The Duchess and indulge in its superb Meditteranean and French-influenced cuisine. Don’t forget to stop by the marble bar for aperitifs straight out of the roaring twenties.Surrounded by opulence of the Belle Époque caliber, the menu showcases quality ingredients and makes them sing. Such beloved classics as Salade Niçoise and Beef Wellington are perfected and served in the candlelight.

De Juwelier

One of the more recent additions to Amsterdam’s Michelin list, De Juwelier is the latest project of chefs Richard van Oostenbrugge and Thomas Groot - the mastermind duo behind two-starred Restaurant 212. The bistro-style decor is both relaxed and chic whilst the a la carte menu features a great range of Franco-inspired dishes with an emphasis on seafood.

De Kas

Restaurant De Kas is located in what is essentially a giant 1920s greenhouse that grows its own produce. Enjoy an unforgettable culinary experience based on fresh, seasonal produce with menus that are created daily depending on what’s been picked from the garden that same day. During nice weather, you can dine outside in the herb garden.

Lars

The brainchild of head chef Lars Scharp, Lars is all about exceptional French cuisine supplemented by Asian influences. Indulge in a 5 or 6-course dinner menu including an amuse-bouche or a 3 or 4-course lunch - all accompanied by a wide-ranging wine list. You’ll find the stylish dining room located in the Moxy Hotel on the Danzigerkade in the increasingly-trendy Houthavens neighbourhood.

Lastage

This cosy restaurant is the destination for unpretentious food where simplicity is turned into a marvel. The location couldn’t get more central and the atmosphere is welcoming and intimate. Chef Rogier van Dam’s classical French training mixes with a passion for Northern Dutch traditions, resulting in combinations that melt in your mouth. Look out for the home made bacon and local celebrated ingredients such as mackerel and jenever.

Le Restaurant

The unassuming entrance conceals an upscale French restaurant with dedicated service and keen ability to make ingredients stand out within their highly technical ensembles. With seasonal menus inspired by the nearby Albert Cuypmarkt, each dish is plated elegantly while still challenging its traditional roots with a touch of Asian influence. This balance is tough to achieve but Le Restaurant cracks it, all while offering great value for your money.

MOS Amsterdam

With an impeccable view of the IJdok marina, surrounded by chic velvet decor that manages to carry a touch of informality, MOS sets the stage for a memorable experience. The kitchen is inspired by a French and international cuisine and the wine list is extensive enough to satisfy the pickiest guest. The menu shines with experimental combinations that stand out thanks to Chef Egon van Hoof’s technical mastery.

Restaurant 212

This two Michelin star restaurant has sleek and angular modern interior, and a laid-back atmosphere which makes it clear: the focus is on the food over high-brow etiquette. There are no tables in Restaurant 212, only the bar from which you can watch the kitchen working ordinary ingredients into extraordinary dishes. With two Michelin stars under its belt, Restaurant 212 is set on providing a gastronomic spectacle to its guests.

RIJKS

RIJKS, the restaurant of the Rijksmuseum, offers a locally-sourced menu that complements a lengthy stroll through the rooms of the museum. RIJKS' kitchen upholds the principles of Slow Food, an organisation that promotes regional cuisine, and the Ark of Taste, which encourages the use of local ingredients. Platters highlighting regional fish or meat — gurnard or pigeon, for example — are available, as are artisanal cheeses. Afterwards, head to one of RIJKS’ four espresso bars for a coffee with a dash of the Dutch liqueur advocaat.

Ron Gastrobar

Ron Blaauw offers acclaimed, stylish gastronomical dining with an accessible twist: surprising (and surprisingly affordable) menus for a variety of occasions. It’s all about enjoying the experience at this restaurant offering delicious food with a French/international theme. Main courses start at €15 – not bad for a restaurant that was awarded a Michelin star in autumn 2013.

The two-star Michelin restaurant in Amsterdam’s Waldorf Astoria branch combines the delights of the countryside with the atmosphere of urban surroundings. Located on the lower ground floor of the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam, Spectrum offers beautiful views of the courtyard garden. The interior style is classic, warm and inviting, and the vibrant cuisine – created by executive chef Sidney Schutte – brings together delicious local specialities and international cuisine (think Asian culinary influences and the finest regional produce from local farmers).

In the heart of Amsterdam’s De Pijp neighbourhood, Sinne offers its own take on classic French cuisine and Mediterranean delicacies. Wood panelling and an open kitchen are the main elements of Sinne’s simple yet cosy surroundings, where classic French cuisine and Mediterranean delicacies with a modern twist are served by the Michelin-honoured kitchen.

Vinkeles

Restaurant Vinkeles is a unique destination in the heart of Amsterdam. The intimate and historic setting offers the perfect mood to enjoy the cooking of the talented executive chef and his team. Executive Chef Dennis Kuipers' modern French cuisine – with its innovative international twist – is often described as “exciting, modest and refined,” so it's no surprise that the restaurant was awarded a Michelin star in 2009.

Vermeer

Chef Christopher Naylor uses local Dutch ingredients, such as beetroot, Dutch prawns, and white asparagus, liberally on his menu at Michelin-starred Restaurant Vermeer. His passion for seasonal products is especially evident in his seasonal and ‘From the Land’ menus, where vegetables are his great inspiration.

At this new star on Amsterdam’s bright-burning culinary scene, you’ll be coddled with casual fine-dining that has the kind of subtle smoky edge only cooking on an open fire can bring.
