Chill out on an urban beach alongside the canal, against a romantically gritty industrial backdrop. Roest offers a taste of that old-school Amsterdam squat atmosphere, but now with ice buckets to chill your sauvignon blanc. Wood fires burn till late in the evening, so you can go on chatting or dancing in the firelight. Note Roest is closed until 2020 for major building works.

Vergulden Eenhoorn

On a sunny day, the Vergulden Eenhoorn is an oasis of rural peace in the middle of the city. The 300-year-old farmhouse has a terrace surrounded by a leafy picnic garden, where you can sip a drink and enjoy dishes made using locally-sourced ingredients.

Canvas has a terrace on the roof of the Volkshotel, a former office building where national daily de Volkskrant once rolled off the press. With its panoramic views of the city, this terrace has to be one of the best places to hang out in Amsterdam. When it gets late, clubbers can move downstairs to Club Canvas and check out the cocktails and DJs.

De Biertuin

De Biertuin (translation: ‘the beer garden’, so the clue’s in the name) keeps the tables on its enclosed roadside terrace outside all year round. It’s a top spot for friendly service, pub-style food (try the speciality rotisserie chicken), relaxed atmosphere, and of course a large selection of great beers.

De Ysbreeker

De Ysbreeker is an Amsterdam classic. On the quiet side of the River Amstel, the terrace offers a wide view of the water and houseboats, under the dappled shade of an avenue of trees. It’s a lovely spot to watch the people and boats go by. You can just have a drink, or dine at the brasserie-style restaurant.

Louie Louie

Louie Louie, named after the 1960s hit by The Kingsmen, is a great all-day hangout, for breakfast (including churros) coffee, lunch, drinks, or dinner, with a Latin American inspired menu. This newly-glamorised hotspot has a big sunny terrace with a view of the grand Tropenmuseum building over the road.

Brouwerij ’t IJ

Brouwerij ’t IJ was an independent local microbrewery long before anyone dreamed up the modern terminology. The bar-cum-brewery is housed in a former bathhouse next door to a proper Dutch windmill. There’s a large enclosed terrace with rows of picnic tables, which stays busy in all weathers. You can arrive by boat and moor on the quay, and also take a tour of the brewery. It’s a great spot to enjoy some of Amsterdam’s finest craft beers, and at a better price than you’ll find them elsewhere.

Escape to a leafy sanctuary set high above the city. Set on the rooftop of Hotel Casa 400, Nest offers some of the most impressive views in Amsterdam. The bar’s own garden flourishes with seasonal produce for the dishes and delicious herbs for the cocktails. It doesn’t get much fresher than that.

Bar Basquiat

Bar Basquiat has a long pavement terrace in the heart of the lively, multicultural Indische Buurt. With design inspired by the work of US artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, the bar has a New York flavour and playful graphic features. There’s a varied menu at lunchtime, plus street food and fancy cocktails in the evening.

De Plantage

Café Restaurant De Plantage is housed in one of the elegant buildings of Artis Zoo, though you don’t have to visit the zoo to enjoy the leafy, park-like atmosphere. The café itself gives an inside-outside feeling, and the terrace spills out onto an open square with pretty lights in the trees after dark. There’s a varied, modern lunch and dinner menu, and a good wine list.
