Duration: Full day

  • Take the train from Amsterdam Central Station to Naarden-Bussum (towards Amersfoort Vathorst or Zwolle via Weesp). From Naarden-Bussum, take bus 110 to Naarden. The journey takes around 50 mins including the train ride.
  • Naarden is one of the best-preserved fortified towns in Europe, famous for its ‘star fort’ grid which resembles a giant snowflake from the air. Naarden has plenty of cafés, shops and attractions to explore, and its Grote Kerk is one of the Netherlands’ oldest churches. While there you should also visit the Dutch Fortress Museum.
  • From Naarden, take bus 110 or 210 or rent a bike and cycle to Muiden.
  • Take a walk through the historic centre of Muiden, a fortified town which sits near the IJmeer and dates back to the 10th century. It is known for its peaceful streets, small cafés, historic landmarks and picturesque harbour.
  • After your walk head to the medieval Muiderslot Castle (Entry is free with your I amsterdam City Card).
  • From Muiden, take bus 110 or 210 to Weesp. Take the time to explore the historic city centre, which dates back to the 14th century and contains many fortifications and battlements which form part of the historic defence line of Amsterdam. While in the city you can admire more than 200 historic monuments, including two forts, three historical windmills and several buildings that date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, and the fascinating Museum Weesp.
  • Rent a bike at the bus/train station (Fietspoint, €12.50) and follow the River Vecht. The riverbank offers unimpeded views of the imposing castles (such as those at Breukelen and Oud-Zuylen), ornate country estates and accompanying tearooms.
  • Don’t forget to stop by at Fort Uitermeer. Next to the fort you’ll find a lovely restaurant – the perfect stop for a refreshing drink or a good meal.
  • To discover all the forts and castles in this area, download the English app with free audio tour (search for ‘Layar’ and then ‘Fortenland’ in the app store).
  • From Weesp, trains back to Amsterdam run every 15 minutes.
