Imagine enjoying a plateau de fruits de mer, sipping a glass of refreshing white wine while the water of the IJ gently laps at the banks right below your feet. Cargo ships sail by in the distance while the former ship dock fills the atmosphere with industrial grandeur. The city, only a 10 minute ferry ride away from the centre, displays its towers, lights and harbour in bright daylight or during evening splendour.
No matter if you come alone or with a large group of adults and children, there is always a place on the terrace of café De IJ-Kantine. Next to the 150 wooden chairs and benches, there are beach chairs and chic beanbags on which to rest weary feet. And if that isn’t enough, there are plush pillows waiting at the waterside for your arrival. The sun shines on the café from the early morning ‘til sunset. Stylish parasols offer you shade, while a sandpit gives the kids a fun playground in which to exhaust their energy.
Exploring Amsterdam by boat? Moor at the private pontoon in front of the restaurant, and take a seat to feast upon the worldly cuisine — salads, seafood, burgers, meat, snacks and special beers and cocktails are served from 9.00 until late in the evening.
The free ferry ride takes you from the back of Central Station on a breathtaking 10-minute trip over the IJ to the NDSM wharf, a former shipyard where the past, present and future collide to create a spectacular blend of industrial and artistic heritage, complete with cultural events and unique restaurants. For activities at NDSM wharf, visit http://www.ndsm.nl.
It’s a short one-minute walk from the ferry landing to the terrace. By car, it’s just a 10-minute drive from Central Station to De IJ-Kantine. There are always more than enough parking spaces — even for tour buses — at a nominal fee of € 1,30 an hour.
