The spouse of the man, a 37-year-old Amsterdammer, was also arrested. He is accused of possession of child pornography. He is currently not accused of sexual abuse of young children.

The 27-year-old man was arrested after a 7 December 2010 broadcast of Opsporing Verzocht(Dutch crime stopper television program), where a photograph was shown of an unknown boy around two years of age. The boy was recognised during the broadcast and his identity confirmed. That same night, the 27-year-old suspect was arrested. He appears to be a former employee of at least two nursery schools in Amsterdam and offered nanny services over the Internet.

From February 2007 until June 2009, the suspect worked at various branches of the nursery school Hofnarretje in Amsterdam. From October 2009 until January 2010, he was employed by Jenno’s Knuffelparadijs on the Admiraal de Ruyterweg in Amsterdam. As of 21 October 2010, the accused was registered with the brokerage website for childcare workers 'mr Nosy', from 12 March 2009, he offered himself as a babysitter over the Internet on and through the Caro childcare centre.

The reason a picture of the boy was shown was due to an investigation by the United States Department of Justice into child pornography. American research into this material revealed a number of photographs and videos which were likely to have been made in Netherlands. The U.S. authorities then contacted the Justice Department in the Netherlands who immediately began an investigation.

Police are investigating if there are others involved in the abuse. The suspect has admitted to abusing several dozen young children. What exactly took place is being further investigated.

An information meeting for parents and guardians of children who were in the care of the nursery schools during the period the suspect was employed and who have used his nanny services via the Internet is being held Sunday evening. The municipal government, police, Public Health Service (GGD) and Public Prosecution Service (OM) will be present.

The need for assistance to the victims and their parents and guardians is paramount. At the moment, it is not clear which young children are victims. By displaying a photograph of the defendant at the press conference Sunday night and on the Dutch website, we will attempt to reach as many people as possible and gather information about the suspect in relation to the investigation.

A special telephone number is available for parents: 020-559 3600. Here, people can get more information, assistance, file a report or get into contact with the police. Anonymous reports may be made through the Anonymous Report Crime line at 0800-7000.

The police arrested a man from Zaandam today who had been operating in one of the nursery schools where the 27-year-old man also worked. He was arrested for indecent acts over the Internet.
