Mayor Cohen's success
Cohen was inaugurated as Mayor of Amsterdam on 17 January 2001 and was appointed for a second term early in 2007. Deputy Mayor Lodewijk Asscher will provide details regarding the situation in light of Mayor Cohen's departure in the next few days.
Mayor Cohen held a number of additional positions including Regional Police Force Manager for Amsterdam-Amstelland, Chairman of the Regional Organ Amsterdam (ROA), Chairman of AB Stichting Amsterdam Partners and Chairman of Stichting Koninklijk Paleis (Royal Palace Foundation). Job Cohen will also resign from these positions with immediate effect.
'I will miss it terribly'
In a spoken statement, Mayor Cohen explained that his decision to step down as Mayor of Amsterdam did not come easily: 'I have put everything into this role for nearly ten years and I will miss it terribly. Working as Mayor of Amsterdam represents the pinnacle of my career so far'.
