Scheduling appointments at the Expatcenter
Before summer, we began running a pilot of our new online appointment tool. First reactions were positive, and we received some helpful feedback from users with ways to improve this service even more. We are now busy implementing these improvements to the appointment tool, so have extended the pilot phase of this project. We will of course keep you updated on when this tool will be available for all clients.
In the meantime, the procedure for scheduling appointments remains as follows:
For combined procedures (immigration and municipal registration for Non-EU citizens):
- no need to fill in the online appointment form
- once the application has been approved, the IND notifies us and we will contact you to book an appointment
- you can also contact us by phone to schedule an appointment once you have been notified of the IND’s decision yourself. In this case, please make sure you have the applicant’s V number at hand
For single procedures (registration at the municipality, or for short-stay migrants, in the Registry for Non-Residents – mainly EU citizens):
- complete the online appointment form
- once you have completed the form, call +31 20 254 7999 (press 1 after being connected) to schedule a date and time for the appointment
Busy times at the Expatcenter
July, August and September are always our busiest months at the Expatcenter – and this year has been busier than ever. Despite our recent expansion, a 25% increase in clients since last year has meant that it can still be a struggle to fit everyone in.
In the last month alone we have helped more than 1000 people to successfully apply for a Personal Public Service Number (BSN number) and/or a residence permit. But the downside of such high demand for our services is that our front office is running at full capacity, and we have to be extremely strict with appointment times in order to ensure that everyone is seen.
We understand how frustrating it can be when we run out of time during an appointment, but you can help us by arriving early and ensuring that all of your documents are in order in advance of your appointment. With such high demand we cannot currently afford for appointments to overrun, but kindly note that we are doing everything we can to ensure that procedures are dealt with as quickly as possible.
In order to keep things running smoothly and efficiently during busy time periods, we have established a set of simple guidelines. Please assist us by taking these guidelines into consideration on your next visit to the Expatcenter.
Changes in law to prevent fake marriages
Those wishing to register a foreign marriage or civil partnership with the Municipal Personal Records Database (Basisregistratie Personen, BRP) after 1 September 2015 must officially declare that the marriage or partnership was not entered into for the purpose of gaining resident status in the Netherlands. Both spouses will need to sign the relevant declaration.
Spouses are exempt from signing the declaration if:
- at least ten years have passed since they entered into the marriage/partnership
- the marriage/partnership has since been divorced
- both spouses have Dutch nationality, have a residence permit for indefinite duration (verblijfsvergunning voor onbepaalde tijd) – both regular or asylum – or are EU nationals
This declaration replaces the M46 procedure, which the Foreign Police (vreemdelingenpolitie) and the IND had previously used to investigate whether a marriage or civil partnership was entered into for the purpose of gaining a residence permit.
Things to look out for when completing the address registration form
We have recently become aware of some issues regarding the completion of the address registration form, which enables an employer to give an employee (and/or the employee’s family members) permission to temporarily register at the company address.
When completing and submitting the form, please take the following into account:
- The form must be completed in advance by the authorised person at the employer’s company
- The form needs to be signed and stamped by the contact at the company
- If the company doesn’t have a company stamp, please attach a copy of the signee’s passport or other proof of identity
- The form can either be handed over to the employee or the employee’s relocation agency, or emailed in advance to the employee’s account manager or to [email protected]
- If the above requirements are not met, the employee can’t be registered at the company address
Kindly note that by submitting the form, the employer guarantees that all mail received at this visiting address reaches the employee. In addition, the employer guarantees that the employee will not be registered at the company address for a period longer than three months, and that the employee will notify the municipality of the change of address within five working days after moving to a new residence.

'Welcome to Amsterdam' arrival event
All internationals that have moved to Amsterdam within the past three months are invited to a dedicated ‘Welcome to Amsterdam’ arrival event at De Nieuwe Liefde on 28 September 2015.
Jointly hosted by the City of Amsterdam, the Expatcenter and the international comedy theatre Boom Chicago, the evening will be a fantastic opportunity to meet likeminded newcomers in an informal setting. Representatives of various organisations will be offering practical advice about living and working in Amsterdam – while the Boom Chicago comedians will be on hand to share their fun insights about life in the city. There’ll also be free advice from the career specialist CV Doctor.
Quick questionnaire for international employees
The City of Amsterdam, along with municipalities in the Amsterdam Area, want to improve the living and working conditions of internationals in Amsterdam, starting by identifying which areas can be improved.
The Expatcenter Amsterdam has therefore entered into a cooperation project with the Municipal Ombudsman to get a better understanding of the issues and challenges faced by international citizens living in Amsterdam.
