On 8 April 2016, Amsterdam was awarded the title ‘European Capital of Innovation (iCapital)’ by the European Commission in Brussels. Turin and Paris took second and third place in the competition. Amsterdam came first for its approach based on smart solutions, startups, liveability and digital social innovation.
Kajsa Ollongren, Alderperson for Economic Affairs:
“We’re very pleased to have won this prize. The city has gained this recognition thanks to the courage and ideas of many different people. I’m thinking of all the creative entrepreneurs and innovative scientists who feel at home in Amsterdam. We already believed that we were leading the field. This is the confirmation.”
The title comes with a prize of 950,000 euros to spend on boosting innovation in the city even further. The partners involved will decide together how the money should be used.
