Celebrating centuries of academic greatness

UvA, the Netherlands’ largest university, celebrated the momentous anniversary this year. And 385th birthdays are no everyday occurrence, so – in true university fashion – UvA’s celebrating in style.

The anniversary celebrations are all themed around ‘inspiring generations’, something the university has proudly done for the last 385 years – and will continue to do so well into the future. Existing events, such as open days, will be given an extra celebratory flair, and the nifty UvA385 grant will give PhD students an extra funding option.

Liven up your ferry ride

Let’s face it: the views on Amsterdam’s northbound ferries are absolutely stunning, but sometimes you need a little knowledge to go with all that visual goodness.

From 5 to 15 September, ferries en route to NDSM between 17:00 and 18:00 will be hosting a range of knowledge-packed lectures, on everything from the River IJ during the Golden Age (14 September) to cycling etiquette in the city (6 September). Check out the full programme (Dutch link).

Pop-up lectures at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

It’s not just the waterborne travellers who’ll be getting their knowledge fix, though; those passing through Amsterdam Airport Schiphol at the end of September are also in luck.

From 25 to 29 September, pop-up lectures will take place at the airport’s Transfer Hall between 14:00 and 15:00. Again, a range of interesting topics will be covered in the lectures, including space and time, 16th-century seafaring and Dutch celebrities.
