While Croatia has been an official member of the European Union since 1 July 2013, and Croatian nationals have been able to reside in the Netherlands legally provided they met basic immigration requirements, a work permit had to be granted in order for them to take up employment. In June 2018, however, the Dutch government confirmed that it would not extend its transition period for Croatian nationals. As such, from 1 July 2018, businesses in the Netherlands no longer have to apply for a work permit on behalf of their Croatian employees.
