Amsterdam’s innovation ecosystem
This is the second edition of the European Capital of Innovation Award. The €950,000 prize is awarded every two years to the European city with the best ‘innovation ecosystem’, connecting citizens, public organisations, academia and business. Amsterdam won for ‘embracing a bottom-up approach based on smart growth, startups, livability and digital social innovation’. Turin and Paris were the first and second runners-up respectively.
The 2016 award
In 2016, 36 cities from twelve countries participated. The contest is open to cities that have over 100,000 inhabitants and that are from EU Member States or countries associated to the European research and innovation programme Horizon 2020. The inaugural European Capital of Innovation was awarded to Barcelona in 2014.
