Increased rights for tenants
To provide extra peace of mind during the current economic circumstances, the Dutch government has passed emergency legislation that protects tenants with fixed-term contracts from eviction. Tenants with rental contracts ending between 1 April and 30 June 2020 can request that their landlords extend them for up to three months and until 1 September 2020.
There are a few exceptions, including plans for sale, demolition or renovation made prior to 1 April. Landlords who need to move into the property and tenants causing nuisance may also be exempt. The period covered by the legislation may be extended as government measures to contain the outbreak continue.
