Available places at international schools

Unfortunately, in some parts of the region, the waiting lists for available places at international schools has proved to a problem for international families, while in other areas there are sufficient spots available. That's why the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area has launched an initiative to gain fresh insight into the nature and extent of the shortage of international school places in the region. In doing so, it will look at short- and long-term solutions.

One such short-term solution is to publish the actual availability of places at all international schools in the region once per month. In doing so, it will make it clear to all interested parties which schools have availability and which schools are closed to new enrolment. As such, the list presented below details the current status of all international schools in the region.

Classes for newcomers

We are also happy to announce an education programme aimed at newcomer children who are aged between 6 and 12 years, have been living in the Netherlands for less than a year and speak no Dutch. Pupils participating in a newcomers’ class will focus on learning Dutch with the aim of continuing on in either regular Dutch or bilingual education after one year. Children aged 12 years and over can instead join an international bridging class.

You can apply directly for a newcomers' class via every primary school in Amsterdam. The school will then arrange the official application for the newcomers' class. In total, there are 17 locations that will host these new classes.

Find out more about the newcomers' classes.

Learn more about education options in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, as well as an overview of international schools, internationally-oriented schools, schools which offer bilingual programmes and the newcomers' classes. For further information, see the brochure "Education in the Netherlands".
