How it works

How do I activate my City Card?

The I amsterdam City Card consists of two parts: museums/attractions and public transport. The museum component will be activated upon your first visit to a museum, attraction or canal cruise included in the ticket. The public transport component is activated at your first check in on a GVB bus, tram or metro. Note: locations offering a discount will not activate your card.

After activation, each part is valid for 24, 48, 72 or 96 hours, depending on your purchase.

Can I reserve time slots at museums and attractions?

Your city card is your entrance ticket, so there's no need to purchase other tickets in combination with it. Please note that from 2018, admissions to the Van Gogh Museum are by pre-booked time slots only. To find out more about booking a time slot ticket at the Van Gogh Museum, click here

How do I use the 25% discounts?

Simply show your I amsterdam City Card at the ticket counter of the attraction. The discount cannot be taken off tickets pre-booked online. The 25% discount and free offers are valid for the entire calendar year, except for the one-time offers as stated.

Do I need to wait in line?

If you have an I amsterdam City Card, you still need to join the queue at the participating museums and attractions, except at the Van Gogh Museum where City Card holders can book a FREE time slot ticket. For a shorter wait at other attractions, avoid peak times and visit major museums early in the morning or late in the afternoon. 

 

If I buy it in December is it still valid in January?

Your I amsterdam city card is valid in the year of purchase and the following year as long as the activation takes place in the year you’ve purchased the I amsterdam City Card. The museum component will be activated at your first visit to a museum, attraction or canal cruise. The public transport component is activated at your first check in on a GVB bus, tram or metro.
The City Card is not activated when you visit a discount location.

Can I share my I amsterdam City Card with someone else?

If the card hasn’t been activated, you can give it to a friend or have someone collect it (as long as they have a valid voucher). It will remain valid until the end of the year. Once the card is activated it is for personal use only.

What’s included?

You can view a complete list of the City Card offers on our website. When you purchase the I amsterdam City Card online, you’ll receive an interactive digital map giving you detailed information on the various offers. If you opt for home delivery, we’ll include a printed version of the map. 

Does it include the train from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station?

No, the City Card is only valid for GVB bus, tram and metro lines in Amsterdam. Train services are not included.

If you wish to travel from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to the city centre, you can purchase the additional public transport tickets such as the Amsterdam Travel Ticket, or the Amsterdam Region Travel Ticket, which includes train travel within the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.
 

Can I use my City Card on Connexxion, Arriva or EBS bus lines?

No, the City Card is only valid on GVB bus, tram and metro lines in Amsterdam. However, the additional Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket does include the use of these bus services within the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.

Does it include entry to the Rijksmuseum?

Yes! From 2018 onwards, you can visit the Rijksmuseum with your City Card free of charge.

Does it include entry to the Anne Frank House?

No, the Anne Frank House is not included with the I amsterdam City Card. Visit the Anne Frank House website for ticket information. 

How do I receive the discounts?

Simply show your City Card at the participating location. It is important to mention that you have a City Card before you order, particularly in restaurants. You can enjoy these discounts throughout the year that your City Card is valid.

And the free gifts?

Just show your City Card at the participating location to receive the gifts.

Can I see everything on display at the museums?

Some museums occasionally host special exhibitions which require a supplementary fee to view. Read more about this here.

Purchasing your I amsterdam City Card

Which payment methods are accepted?

You can pay by credit card (JCB, Visa or Mastercard) or Paypal online. Alternatively, once you’re in Amsterdam you can pay for your I amsterdam City Card by credit card (Visa or MasterCard), debit card or cash, depending on the store’s policy.

Picking up your City Card and delivery information

Can I have the card delivered to me?

Of course. Simply select the home delivery option when you order your City Card online. Delivery takes a maximum of 10 working days, so be sure to leave enough time before your trip. You’ll also receive a free copy of I amsterdam Magazine and a detailed city map for planning your journey.

Where can I collect it from?

When you arrive in Amsterdam, you can collect your City Card from several locations including:

Amsterdam Central Station: find the I amsterdam Store located on the north side of the station. Open Monday - Wednesday: 08:00-19:00, Thursday - Saturday: 8.00-20.00, Sunday: 10:00-16:00.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol: I amsterdam Visitor Information Centre Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, Arrivals Hall 2: Holland Tourist Information. Open daily from 07:00 to 22:00

Amsterdam Central Station: I amsterdam Visitor Information Centre at Stationsplein 10 (opposite the main station entrance) Open Monday - Saturday: 09:00-17:00, Sunday: 09:00-16:00.

What should I do if I haven’t received my City Card?

First of all, check your track and trace and contact DHL if you require further assistance.

If you haven't received your card and you're leaving for your trip to Amsterdam, please visit our I amsterdam Visitor Centre at Stationsplein 10 (opposite the Central Station) when you arrive.

Can I change my order to include home delivery?

Unfortunately, we can’t change the delivery method after you’ve ordered your City Card. 

Cancelling or changing your City Card

I had to cancel my trip to Amsterdam. Can I get a refund on my City Card?

Unfortunately, we can’t refund your City Card if you cancel your trip. We recommend contacting your travel insurance provider as it may be covered by your policy. 

Alternatively, you can give the card to someone else who’s visiting Amsterdam. Just give them the voucher including the unique order number and they can pick up the card at our Visitor Centre at Stationsplein on arrival. Remember, the I amsterdam City Card is valid until 31 December of the calendar year, should you be able to visit at a later date!

I’m spending more (or less) time in Amsterdam. Can I change the duration of my City Card?

If you'd like to buy more hours, we can upgrade your pre-paid voucher at the Visitor Centres at Schiphol or Stationsplein when you arrive. We cannot upgrade your card once it's been used. Unfortunately we cannot remove hours after you've purchased the card.

Is the I amsterdam City Card suitable for children?

Absolutely. The I amsterdam City Card offers significant savings at many children's attractions in Amsterdam, including free entry at the NEMO Science Museum and ARTIS Royal Zoo. See an overview of the children's attractions and entrance fees with the City Card. 

Is there a discount for families or groups?

The I amsterdam City Card is intended for individual use, so there are no special discounts for families or groups.

Is the City Card suitable for senior citizens (65+) or disabled visitors?

In the unlikely event that you experience problems

What can I do if my card is not working?

Please go to the I amsterdam Visitor Centre at Stationsplein 10 (opposite Amsterdam Central Station). They can check what’s wrong with your card and provide you with a new one if necessary.

My City Card is lost or stolen. Can I get a replacement card?

Unfortunately, we cannot replace lost or stolen cards. If you have travel insurance, you may be able to be reimbursed for your City Card, depending on your insurance policy. 

What can I do if I didn’t receive a voucher?

First, check your spam folder in case it was sent there by mistake. If for any reason you still don’t receive it, you can pick up your I amsterdam City Card by showing confirmation of your payment instead.
