How does the City Card work

Activation of the City Card

The I amsterdam City Card consists of two parts; museums/attractions and public transport. The museum component will be activated at your first visit to a museum, attraction or canal cruise. The public transport component is activated at your first check in on a GVB bus, tram or metro.

The I amsterdam City Card is not activated when you visit a discount location.

After activation, each part is valid for 24, 48, 72 or 96 hours, depending on your purchase.

Pre purchased and timeslot tickets

Your city card is your entrance ticket. It’s not possible to reserve online time slots or tickets in combination with the I amsterdam City Card. 

25% discount

You only receive the 25% discount at the entrance of the attraction by showing your I amsterdam City Card at the door. It’s not possible to get the discount before arrival or through online pre-booked tickets. The 25% discount and free offers are valid for the entire calendar year - except for the one-time offers, when this is stated at the discount offers.

Waiting in line yes/no?

If you have an I amsterdam City Card, you still need to join the queue at the participating museums and attractions. To avoid the waiting lines we advise you to visit these locations early in the morning or at the end of the afternoon.

Can I share my I amsterdam City Card with someone else?

Not activated: You can give your card to someone else or have someone else pick up the card(s) you’ve ordered as long as they have a valid voucher. Note that the card is valid till the end of the year only.

Activated: No, the I amsterdam City Card is strictly personal once activated.

Year transition December to January

Your I amsterdam city card is valid in the year of purchase and the following year as long as the activation takes place in the year you’ve purchased the I amsterdam City Card. The museum component will be activated at your first visit to a museum, attraction or canal cruise. The public transport component is activated at your first check in on a GVB bus, tram or metro.
The City Card is not activated when you visit a discount location.

What’s included

A complete range of City Card offers are listed on the website. You can use the interactive digital map to get detailed info on the different offers. When you buy the I amsterdam City Card, you will receive a city map including detailed information on what’s included.

Does it include the train Schiphol from and to Amsterdam Central Station?

No, the City Card is only valid for bus, tram and metro lines of the GVB in Amsterdam. Train services are not included.

If you wish to travel by train from Schiphol to Amsterdam, an additional Amsterdam Region Travel Ticket can be purchased. This ticket includes the use of trains within the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.

Can I use my City Card on Connexxion, Arriva or EBS bus lines?

No, the City Card is only valid on GVB bus, tram and metro lines in Amsterdam. The ticket is not valid on Connexxion, Arriva and EBS bus lines. You can buy Amsterdam Region Travel Ticket if you want to travel to and in the Metropolitan Area.

Rijksmuseum

With the I amsterdam City Card you receive a € 2.50 discount at the Rijksmuseum entrance.

Anne Frank

No, the Anne Frank House is not included in the I amsterdam City Card. Via the Anne Frank website you can book a timeslot ticket.

Discount offers

You will receive your discount simply by showing your City Card at the participating location. It is important that you mention you have a City Card before you order, particularly in restaurants. You can enjoy these discounts throughout the year of the validity of your City Card.

Free gifts

You will receive your free gift simply by showing your City Card at the participating location.

Additions, extra charge at museums

Occasionally, museums have a special exhibitions, depending on the museum, a supplement must be paid to enter this part of the museum. Read all about it here.

Purchasing your I amsterdam City Card

Payment methods

Online credit card (JCB, Visa or Mastercard) and Paypal are accepted. In Amsterdam you can pay for your I amsterdam City Card by credit card (Visa or MasterCard), debit card or cash, depending on the shop’s policy.

Home delivery

When you order your City Card online here, you can choose home delivery. Delivery takes max. 10 working days. You will receive a free A-Mag glossy magazine and detailed city map with your City Card.

Picking up your City Card

Pick-up locations

After arrival in Amsterdam, you can collect your City Card at:
- Amsterdam Central Station: I amsterdam Store, on the North side of the station. Open Monday - Wednesday: 08:00 - 19:00, Thursday - Saturday: 8.00 - 20.00, Sunday: 10:00 - 16:00.
- Amsterdam Airport Schiphol: I amsterdam Visitor Information Centre Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, Arrivals Hall 2: Holland Tourist Information. Open daily from 07:00 to 22:00
- Amsterdam Central Station: I amsterdam Visitor Information Centre at Stationsplein 10 (opposite the main station entrance) Open Monday - Saturday: 09:00 - 17:00, Sunday: 09:00 - 16:00.

Late arrival (after 10pm): You can visit the I amsterdam Visitor Centers or the I amsterdam Store the next day.

Home delivery

Home delivery

When you order your City Card online here, you can choose home delivery. Delivery takes max. 10 working days. You will receive a free A-Mag glossy magazine and detailed city map with your City Card. Make sure to choose an address where you’ll be home during the day.

I haven’t received my I amsterdam City Cards.

I haven’t received my I amsterdam City Cards and leaving for Amsterdam

Please check your DHL track and trace. If you have to leave without having received the card(s) please visit our I amsterdam Visitor Centre at Stationsplein 10 (opposite the Central Station) for help.

Change order to home delivery

Unfortunately, this is not possible.

Cancelling or changing your City Card

I had to cancel my trip to Amsterdam. Can I get a refund?

Unfortunately, this is not possible.

  • Contact your travel insurance, they should refund you for all costs made when your trip was cancelled for a valid reason.
  • If you know someone else who would like to use the cards, it’s completely fine. You can hand over your voucher with unique order number to them and they can pick up the cards at one of our Visitor’s Centers on arrival.
  • The I amsterdam City Card is valid until December 31stof the calender year. You can still decide to come down to Amsterdam later this year and use your cards.

Can I change my I amsterdam City Card for one with more/less hours?

More hours: yes, please visit one of our Visitor Centres at Schiphol or Stationsplein on arrival to upgrade to another card.
Less hours: Unfortunately, this is not possible.

Kids, families, groups & senior citizens

I amsterdam City Card for children?

The I amsterdam City Card offers significant savings for children aged 10 years and older.

There’s no special kids rate for the I amsterdam City Card. Many museums already offer free admission or special discounts for children.

Please check out the Kids prices factsheet to see if purchasing the I amsterdam City Card for your child is more advantageous. Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum offer free entrance. Children up to 17 years old will have free entrance at the Van Gogh Museum. Nemo Science Museum and Artis Zoo will provide a small reduction in the entrance fee for children.

Families

There are no special discounts for families or groups. The I amsterdam City Card is for individual use.

Seniors (65+) or disabled visitors?

Many museums and attractions already offer substantial discounts for seniors (65+) and disabled people. However, if you plan to visit a lot of locations and make frequent use of public transport, the City Card can still offer significant savings.

Groups

No, the I amsterdam City Card is an individual product and is not meant to be used by groups. Groups can contact the locations in order to book their visit at museums or attractions, best is to do this well in advance (often at least one week). Possibly you can receive a group discount.

Problems

My card is not working

Please go to the I amsterdam Visitor Centre at Stationsplein 10 (opposite the Central Station). They can check what’s wrong with your card and provide you with a new one if necessary.

My City Card is lost or stolen. Can I get a replacement card?

Unfortunately, this is not possible. If you have travel insurance, the City Card might be reimbursed, depending on your insurance coverage.

I had to cancel my trip to Amsterdam. Can I get a refund?
