Fastned to deliver fast-charging station at UK’s first ‘superhub’

Amsterdam-based Fastned, a developer and operator of public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, has teamed up with Oxford City Council, Pivot Power, Tesla and Wenea to build and operate a fast-charging station at the upcoming Energy Superhub Oxford.

The hub, due to open at the end of 2021, will “set the benchmark for charging stations of the future” as more drivers embrace electric, a press statement said.

Fastned will initially install ten chargers at the superhub with 300kW of power, capable of adding 300 miles of range in just 20 minutes for up to hundreds of EVs a day.

The station will be powered solely by renewable energy, partly generated by Fastned’s trademark solar roof. In total the hub will have 38 chargers, and is predicted to save 10,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year – equivalent to taking over 2,000 cars off the road.

Fastned CEO Michiel Langezaal said: “Our mission is to accelerate the transition towards electric mobility by giving freedom to electric drivers. EV drivers experience this freedom when they know that fast and convenient charging is omnipresent. Big stations are the only way to provide charging capacity to the exponentially growing number of EVs coming to our roads.”

Founded in 2012, Fastned aims to build a network of 1,000 fast-charging stations across Europe by 2025. It currently has stations in Germany, the UK, Switzerland and the Netherlands.

Amsterdam at the forefront of EV revolution

The Netherlands’, and particularly Amsterdam, has been at the forefront of the smart mobility industry for many years, thanks to its low car dependency and policies such as Amsterdam’s Clean Air Action Plan, that aims to reduce pollution and make it the global capital of emission-free mobility. Amsterdam was recently listed in Deloitte’s City Mobility Index 2020 as having one of the world’s most robust and future-ready mobility sectors. The city also has the highest density of electric vehicle chargers in the world. And, the local Mobility as a Service (MaaS) industry is booming, thanks to the likes of electric scooter rental company Felyx and ridesharing firm ViaVan.
