Advancing Amsterdam’s renewable aviation industry

Neste, a Finnish oil refining and marketing company that’s also the world’s top provider of renewable diesel, has opened a new office in Hoofddorp, which is part of the greater Amsterdam Area. The location will act as an international hub for its expanding renewable aviation business and the company is also launching a new product, Neste MY Renewable Diesel. The fuel will be made from completely renewable raw materials and will be available at more than 60 locations across the Netherlands by the end of the year.

In a statement, Neste president and CEO Peter Vanacker said that, “The opening of our new office in the Netherlands marks an important step in the execution of our growth strategy for renewable aviation globally. We are determined to serve our customers and the entire aviation industry in reducing greenhouse gas emissions with our Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel. It has been tested in over 1,000 commercial flights and is already being sold and used in the market.”

Answering the global demand for sustainable air travel

Currently, Amsterdam is becoming hub for sustainable aviation. Earlier this year, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines committed itself to developing and buying 75,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel annually for the next decade in a bid to reduce CO2 emissions. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is also pursuing various green initiatives and uses an electric bus fleet that has slashed its carbon emissions by more than 1,743 tonnes over the last three and a half years.

By opening an office in Hoofddorp, Neste aims to accelerate business growth while pursuing its goal of becoming the global aviation industry’s leading supplier of renewable jet fuel. To answer growing demand, the company has already increased its production capacity and can make up to 100,000 tonnes of renewable fuel each year. By 2022, it aims to be able to produce more than 1 million tonnes annually.

The new fuel will play an import role in addressing climate change, according to Carl Nyberg, executive vice president for Neste’s renewable road transportation business unit.

“The climate crisis is one of the biggest challenges of our times,” he said in a statement. “With the use of Neste MY Renewable Diesel, our customers can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil diesel. We are excited to launch the fuel now also in the Netherlands. It is a sustainable alternative to fossil diesel and requires no modifications to existing engines or vehicles.”
