Amsterdam’s healthy social habits

According to Spotahome, it's easier to stay healthy in a city with healthy social habits – places where clean air, fresh food and high-quality exercise facilities are valued. But it's much harder in cities with high levels of pollution, too many fast-food restaurants and not enough green space.

The Netherlands: a very liveable country

In general, Dutch cities performed well in the global ranking: Amsterdam was placed first while Rotterdam took fourth. This should come as no surprise, given the renowned liveability in the Netherlands and, of course, the Amsterdam Area.

The online accommodation rental site gave high scores to Amsterdam in the categories of work-life balance, electric car charging points, life expectancy at birth and green spaces. However, the city lost points in the category of annual sunshine hours. Rotterdam – placed in fourth − scored slightly lower than the Dutch capital across most categories. However, it received a higher score for its lower number of fast-food outlets, and better air and water quality. Other European cities were at the top of the index, with Oslo, Munich, and Berlin rounding out the top five.

Data across 10 health-related categories

The index analysed 89 cities' incorporated data from 10 categories: gym availability, vacation days, annual sunshine hours, work-life balance, life expectancy at birth, air and water quality, fast food availability, obesity in adults, green spaces and electric vehicle charging points.

This results in a score between 0 and 10 for each data point, and each country is ranked accordingly based on its overall average score. The index is created using both city and country-level data. In the instance of country-level data, the country score is applied to each city within it.

Best for work-life balance

Of course, one of the most crucial factors of maintaining a healthy lifestyle is to avoid working long hours. The OECD Better Life Index 2018 ranks the Netherlands first in the world for work-life balance.
