Addressing the global shortage of data scientists
With hundreds of programmes, professional tracks and courses as well as the powerful backing of four educational institutes in Amsterdam, the Amsterdam School of Data Science has opened its doors to great fanfare. In late March, hundreds gathered to celebrate the launch of the new international knowledge hub, where students learn to become leaders of data science—and land their dream jobs.
There are just too few qualified people to fill the quickly increasing number of jobs in data science, dubbed the “sexiest job of the 21st century.” Some research reports have projected that the global demand for data scientists will exceed supply by more than 50 percent by 2018, while the Dutch National Think Tank projects a shortage of 8,000 data scientists in the Netherlands alone. The gap is getting wider, even as the salaries for data scientists rise to sky-high levels.
Studying data science can lead to a position in any sector—healthcare, government, law, business and even non-profits—allowing students to pursue their personal passions while maintaining job security. In fact, companies all over the world almost unanimously agree that data and analytics are important to their growth strategies—and they need the people to execute them.
Amsterdam School of Data Science fills the gap
To take advantage of these data opportunities, the Amsterdam School of Data Science, a collaboration between Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Centrum Wiskunde and Informatica, University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, was created.
The Amsterdam School of Data Science provides over 250 bachelor, master, postgraduate and professional programmes and courses across a number of subjects—economics and law, arts and culture, psychology, communications and engineering—that are offered through the various universities in Amsterdam. Students are encouraged to specialise in a field, but work outside their comfort zones with others to solve big-picture problems.
Not only do students receive the best in data science education from leading universities, Amsterdam Data Science partners with some of the biggest names in business: Google, Facebook and Philips, just to name a few. Students of data science receive an instant network of colleagues and potential employers across the globe, giving them yet another advantage on the job market.
