New York startups in Amsterdam
The visit was the second edition of the NYC2Amsterdam bootcamp, organised by StartupAmsterdam and NYCEDC, New York’s engine for economic development. It took place from 24 to 27 May, during which the visiting startups were introduced to the startup scene in Amsterdam and Europe. The programme included meetings with Dutch corporates and launching customers, one-on-one advice on legal, recruitment and financial practices and a company visit to the Amsterdam offices of US company Double Dutch, including a meeting with Sales Manager Pascal van Dalen. The participants also visited some of Amsterdam’s innovative co-working spaces such as B. Amsterdam and The Startup Orgy and had access to the Next Web Conference, where they could promote their business at the StartupAmsterdam booth.
The participating startups – Muserk, Dynamite Labs, Stylesage, Cosign, Autonomous, Elemental Path and MotaWord – come from a variety of industries, ranging from platforms and data to fashion and e-commerce. They had been selected for NYC2Amsterdam on the basis of product/market fit, positive metrics in growth and conversion and an interest in expanding into the European market. Asked about their experiences, the startups reflected that they were surprised by how lively, active and fast-growing the startup community was in Amsterdam, and two of them have since announced plans to open an office in the city: both translation platform Motaword and video app Dynamite Labs were particularly attracted by the multilingual labour pool and Amsterdam’s international character.
The NYC2Amsterdam bootcamp comes in the wake of the deputy mayors of New York and Amsterdam, Alicia Glen and Kajsa Ollongren, agreeing in June 2015 to work together on stimulating the development of tech startups. Glen joined the NYC startups on their trip and was part of a roundtable at the Mayor’s residence about the sharing economy. She also held the closing keynote on the Collaborative Economy stage at the TNW Conference.
New York trip in September
The NYC2Amsterdam bootcamp will be followed up by a similar expedition of Amsterdam-based startups to New York City in September 2016. More information, including details on how to apply to take part, can be found here.
