Amsterdam's tech scene explodes
As Amsterdam is the EU capital of innovation and a leading startup hub, its tech scene is exploding. Nerderlands is the first festival of its kind to create fertile ground for crossovers between tech communities. This is not a conference: it is a holiday for nerds allowing them to submerge in technical, passion-specific activities while taking a break in one the best cities in the world.
Mike Lee, mayor of Appsterdam, one of Amsterdam’s tech communities, has noticed how many like-minded people want to explore Amsterdam:"People have been telling me they need an excuse to come check out the city, but all these cool old buildings make Amsterdam a hard place to host a big conference. It's not that kind of city. It's really about smaller community events happening here all the time. It may be hard to justify flying to a place to attend a meetup – but if it was every meetup, on one schedule, it would be as big as a world expo – just the excuse people need to come check out the community."
The nerdiest schedule ever
Nerderlands offers meetups, workshops, and masterclasses at various locations in the city - everything to feed the nerdy mind. Amsterdam Maker Festival and Big Android BBQ have signed up for the festival, along with Eddie Codel, founder of the Flying Robot International Film Festival, who will fly in to talk drones and show some of his favorite drone films. Niels van Hoorn and Aaron Hillegass, founder of Big Nerd Ranch, will be present at the Cocoaheads meetup. Tech and journalist worlds will collide when educational technologist Bill Ferster joins forces with journalist Teun Gautier (founder of De Coöperatie) for a workshop on data driven storytelling, where 25 techies and 25 journalists team up for a data viz challenge. Of course this is a holiday so there will be ample BBQs, including a Big Android one, drinks, and nerd-friendly yoga (no lycra necessary). Some events will be free, others will charge a small fee.
Amsterdam’s finest tech communities have committed to being part of this unique event including:
- Amsterdam Maker Festival

Nerderlands is organised by Amsterdam's finest tech communities, in collaboration with local startups and international companies. This first edition is co-produced by Appsterdam and StartupAmsterdam. Nerderlands is an open source concept: all Amsterdam-based tech communities are invited to add their event to the schedule, creating a low-key environment for nerds to mingle and meet.
