This is for the significant contribution he has made to the global expansion of the Tata Group, in which he has combined economic growth with a comprehensive corporate social responsibility programme. The honorary doctorate will be received during the University’s Dies Natalis (anniversary) celebrations on 8 January 2013.
Ratan Tata: a successful leader
Ratan Tata will step down as chairman of the Tata Group as of January 2012, leaving behind an impressive business legacy. He has transformed the Tata Group from a relatively loose collection of companies into a closely-knit group of companies with a clear structure and strategy. Under his leadership, significant investments were made in R&D, innovation and the high-tech field. According to the UvA, developments within Tata, as well as with Ratan Tata himself, have frequently been the subject of university studies. As a symbol of Tata, Ratan Tata has great social significance worldwide. He is an important source of inspiration for business and economics, and is frequently portrayed and analysed in academic literature.
Tata Consultancy Services
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is a part of the Tata Group that is headquartered in Amsterdam and was named best ICT employer of 2012 by the CRF Institute. The company has been stepping up its presence across Europe and in the Netherlands through an expansion in both its business and community engagement. In October 2012, the TCS Amsterdam Marathon – a venture that the company supports – included 38,000 runners, who jointly raised 115,000 euros for the VUMC Cancer Center Amsterdam. Over 1,200 of TCS’ clients and employees were amongst the runners.
