Practicing international business law in Amsterdam

International law firm Jones Day opened its office in the centre of Amsterdam in February 2013, focusing on matters related to corporate and M&A, private equity, capital markets, litigation and antitrust law. Luc Houben, Partner-in-Charge at the Amsterdam office, explains how the move allows Jones Day to provide improved services for its clients both in America and the rest of the world.

“Firstly, there is a strong relationship between the Netherlands and the United States. The United States is the largest foreign investor in the Netherlands – ahead of the UK and Luxembourg – and the Netherlands is the third largest foreign investor in the United States, after the UK and Japan. Secondly, the Netherlands is a major and active centre for international headquarters. And thirdly, a significant number of important and large Dutch corporations have a sound global reach.”

Think big and grow your market

Houben goes on to explain that all companies, not only Jones Day, would benefit from opening an office in Amsterdam: “I personally believe there is actually a strong need for a globally-integrated firm like ours in Amsterdam. The vast majority of Amsterdam’s firms, meanwhile, have little or no meaningful presence in the United States, and you can’t be a global player without a significant presence in the most important legal market in the world.”

A major centre for international headquarters

Houben continued by praising the Netherlands as an excellent location for international headquarters, noting that the Dutch have a long history of international trade and are still renowned for their open economy. Houben commented: “Add to that its strategic location – many people consider the Netherlands the gateway to Europe – and a focused policy to attract foreign investments.”

Crucially, Jones Day’s employees certainly feel at home in Amsterdam. “The welcome we received here was beyond anything I have experienced”, said Houben. “The City of Amsterdam helped us with numerous introductions, even assisted us with finding our beautiful premises on the renowned Museumplein – just next door to the US Consulate, and all this with a genuine desire to make us feel at home.”
