Super connection between the UK and Amsterdam

A new ‘super cable’ being installed between IJmuiden, on the North Holland coast, and Lowestoft in the UK, is set to significantly strengthen digital connectivity in Amsterdam and beyond.

The works by euNetwork replace cables first laid in the late 1990s which are now nearing the end of their useful life. The new fibre optic cable, connecting data centres in both countries, will be the first of its kind in the North Sea, with almost twice the capacity for data traffic.

EuNetworks, headquartered in London, builds and operates thousands of miles of cable connections in Europe. Such a super connection already exists between London and Dublin. Amsterdam is now being connected to this via the cable at IJmuiden.

"This really strengthens the economic ties between the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the rest of the world," said Kevin Dean, head of marketing at EuNetworks, highlighting the importance of strong data connections. "This system is state-of-the-art and the first in 20 years."

The cable’s construction will be finished in June, following two years’ work including gaining permissions from both countries. Its installation uses a new, more environmentally-friendly method of laying the cable according to sand waves at the bottom of the sea, so that the cable is eventually buried by the current.

One of the most digitally connected cities in the world

Amsterdam is already considered one of the most digitally connected cities in the world. The AMS-IX, one of the most important internet exchange points in the world, in particular has helped solidify Amsterdam’s reputation as a digital hub, while broadband penetration and digital literacy are among the top ranking in Europe

This digital infrastructure makes the Amsterdam Area an attractive option for tech companies who rely on fast and reliable connections. In addition to a thriving startup scene, innovative spirit and high quality of life, the region is a popular choice for technically minded and digitally savvy talent.
